Many Christians complain about younger generations' lack of faith. These faithful assume others have no interest in spirituality. They do so because these outsiders have no current interest in church. Yes, there are many people who will not see the truth of Christ. But that doesn't not mean there aren't many more who will in time. In fact, if you speak to younger people, there is already a strong interest in the spiritual.
To be sure, there has never been a generation full of people who loved God and wanted to truly follow Jesus. We should give up that illusion. And the church doesn't just happen to grow. Thankfully, God has not abandoned us and the Spirit has not stopped hovering over our chaos. So, I'm always hopeful more Christians will rediscover the mission God gave the church. Gave to you.
In Luke 23, Jesus was close to death on the cross. Darkness covered the skies and at three in the afternoon two things happened. First, the curtain of the temple tore into two pieces. Secondly, Jesus breathed his last. We give much attention to Jesus' sacrifice, as we should. But let's not forget the significance of the torn curtain.
In Acts 10, Luke introduces us to Cornelius. Cornelius loved God and gave generously to people in response. He also "prayed constantly." That is significant in the story of Acts because Cornelius was a gentile. One day, he received a vision from God that connected him to Peter. Luke tells us the time of day the vision came.
At three in the afternoon that day, we see the torn curtain's revealed purpose. All people could now approach God's throne of grace. Even someone like Cornelius. He had no idea what was about to happen. He and his household would be the first gentiles to receive the Holy Spirit. Of course, God could've made that possible by any means. But God was already preparing Peter's heart to recognize what was happening.
You and I should pray we are prepared for the same thing. To welcome, receive and minister with those who have not yet arrived. Let's not assume people who aren't in church aren't seeking. God may bring them to you. Chances are, though, God is asking you to be the one on the lookout.
Stay blessed...john |
