Thank God Jesus Loves Football!

We all know that football is a religion here in Texas, and I'll admit that I'm a dedicated follower. Now, I'm not a religious leader or by any means a fanatic. I don't do fantasy football; I don't know every statistical category; I don't know every roster. I've wanted to paint my face and wear a Darth Vader mask to a game, but have yet to do so.  I do, however, enjoy watching the games either sitting in my La-Z-Boy or in a crowded stadium.  I'm looking forward to watching the Super Bowl on our church's gym wall again.  My reading habits change during football season, I check my favorite team's website often and want to hear what the experts have to say on ESPN or talk radio. If we were to compare the religion of football with Christianity, you might say I'm like the guy who comes to church occasionally during the month and leaves $1 for offering.   I watch enough football to be labeled a follower of the football faith, but don't ...

A message for Charles Barkley

Texas Stadium Implosion

I still haven't had time to drive by to see what it looks like without the stadium there. The Fletchers all hopped in the Minivan with thousands of our neighbors to watch the implosion of Texas Stadium. That was a first for me. I understand being sentimental; I do. But I don't understand how some people get all emotional when talking about this stadium (or lack there of). No, it's not because I am a loud mouth Eagles fan. We won some pretty good games there, too. I thought it was alright to be able to attend the last Monday Night game there . It was a building. I have a hard time with people crying about it. When the Vet in Philadelphia was torn down I thought the same thing. Still, it was a little fun to watch. Here is what we saw : You know me. I was kicking myself for not making some signs that said something like: I Was on my Way to Church Before I Saw This Building Fall Down. Now, I'm Going to Church. Wanna Come? Anyways, bad idea. I thoug...

Giving Back

This guy was big when we were in school.  Things haven't changed too much.  I'm happy for him and and excited that Galveston is getting this.  Let's think: are these the biggest sports names that the island has had at one time?  I think so.  This will be a great event! Gloria and I have been wanting to get there so bad to help do something.  I will say that volunteers and agencies like UMCOR  (I'm not sure which others to name, yet, but I will) have begun work on my family's house.  They've done excellent work in a short amount of time.  It's like they're getting a new home.   And since we're talking about home.  I'm got a hold of another classmate ('96!) that I hadn't seen since graduating.   Go check out his site .  I'm happy about what he's doing as well. The city of Galveston will be able to celebrate the career of native son Casey Hampton later this month. In return, he’s giving back to the island. Hampton, a Ball High and U...

Bye Bye BDawk

He's one of my favorite players. I've been wanting to buy his jersey. Oh well, that's the NFL today. Brian Dawkins is no l onger a Philadelphia Eagle . The Denver Broncos have signed seven-time Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins, the team announced Saturday Brian Dawkins leaves the Eagles as one of the most celebrated players in team history.  Dawkins signed a five-year, $17 million deal that includes $7.2 million guaranteed, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter. The contract also has escalators that could boost the value of the deal to $27 million over five years, but the deal also could be voided to two years, $9 million, reports Schefter.

Eagles 24 - Cardinals 21

Well, that's not my prediction. That's the score from the NFL madden '09 Forecast. I'm feeling good about this one. Who cares what the score is as long as the E-A-G-L-E-S finish strong! Go Green!

MNF

Maybe letting the Eagle out of the bag early wasn't the worst thing I could have done. Next Monday I'll be at Irving stadium watching the Eagles play that other team. A few members of the church invited me to attend. They did say if the Eagles win they wouldn't be at church on Sunday. Can I tell my DS this really great story why our church attendance was down this one week? They also said I couldn't wear any Philadelphia paraphernalia. We'll see what happens. Stay blessed...john

They're In

Two of my all time favorite players (basketball) made the Hall of Fame, Hakeem "The Dream" Alajuwon and Patrick Ewing. How could you not be impressed with the Dream Shake?! I wore a pair of Ewing shoes for two years. Yes, the were a mustard color and matched everything I ever wore! Yahoo news story

Merry Christmas

Eagles 23 Vikings 16

All is good in my world. ** http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d803ac551 **From Sunday School class yesterday: The last words of 1King 6 mention Solomon taking (7) years to build the Temple. The first words of chapter (7) mention it took him (13) years to build his palace. My question to the class was, "Why did it take Solomon almost twice as long to build his palace?" Response: "The wife kept changing the plans." He did have a few of them, didn't he? **I'm going to see if I can get a particular Patch couple to write out their pumpkin story. In the meantime, what about this kid? Stay blessed (I know I am)...john

Faith of an athlete

I'm glad to have read this story: Avant's Faith is Far From Cliche It has become so ordinary. Trite even. A receiver catches a touchdown pass, falls to his knees and points to the sky. After the game he tells Suzy Kolber or Bonnie Bernstein or Michelle Tafoya that he wants to thank God. Admit it. There is a temptation to roll the eyes. It's understandable. Too many times, that same receiver shows up on TV later, involved in something far from holy. Nobody likes to be duped. That's exactly how I feel when some athlete comes on television saying he has found Jesus, or that he/she gives all the glory to God. Of course I know athletes aren't the only people that do this. They just get the bigger stage in our society. Go Eagles! Stay blessed...john

We Are The Champions!

When is it exciting to watch a game that finishes with a score of barely 83-82? Well, of course, when it's Game 4 of a sweep to win the NBA championship! All that dynasty stuff can wait. Let's talk about what matters now. Leaving San Antonio after last night's victory was pretty cool. Everyone was honking their horns, yelling, using the other finger to really say we're #1, high-fiving and just having a good time. I've been watching the Spurs since David Robinson came on board; these last several years have been so much fun. The whole dynasty question will be answered in a few years for sure. Now, if I can just get the Eagles to do the same kind of things. The only thing that bugs me is this whole Eva Longoria thing. Is she our new mascot, or what? Anyways, I'll leave that one alone. Go Spurs Go! Stay blessed...john

Go Spurs Go!

One more to go!! I had given Cleveland (2) games, but now I suppose they'll be fortunate to get one. What a game. Bruce Bowen comes through on offense, Manu scored three points, we went wild on threes. Whatever it takes. Stay blessed...john
