Many of us go to God’s Word for answers. We want God to show us the whole picture so we can know what is coming next, how everything will work out, and what decisions we should make. Now, I will never discourage you from seeking the Bible's wisdom.
But I might suggest you not see the Bible as a spotlight. Psalm 119:105 gives us a different image.
The psalm famously says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Consider that a lamp is not a spotlight that illuminates miles down the road. It gives just enough light for the next step.
Perhaps God’s Word was never meant to satisfy our desire to know everything. Instead, it was given to shape our willingness to obey what God has already shown us.
Think about how often we ask God for more clarity when what we really need is more courage or confidence in what God has already told us. We might want God to show us what's next, but what if God is saying, "I’ve already shown you what you need for today.”
Love your neighbor. Forgive. Serve. Speak truth. Practice mercy. Trust me.
The psalmist doesn’t say, “Your word is a floodlight so I can see every possibility.” The psalmist says God’s Word is a lamp since faith means walking with God one step at a time.
And a lamp only helps if you are walking.
Sometimes we get stuck waiting for God to reveal the entire journey before we take the first step. But God often works the other way around. As we walk faithfully, God continues to reveal the path.
God’s Word may not tell you everything you want to know. But it will always show you enough to follow.
Stay blessed...john
